A strong and growing local industry is required to support the maintenance of current and future visiting Naval vessels. NORSTA will work closely with local suppliers to schedule major and minor maintenance works for many vessels through each year of the program.

A local, capable workforce will be needed, equipped with traditional and emerging skillsets, to deliver maritime maintenance and sustainment services and support the latest military technology and innovation.

Under Plan Galileo, Defence is focusing naval sustainment on a network of Regional Maintenance Centres (RMCs) strategically located around the country in port cities. They have the capability to sustain multiple classes of the Australian Navy’s surface fleet and enabls Defence to respond to the uncertain and shifting strategic environment that Australia faces. The first one is RMC NE and is located in Cairns FNQ.

‘’We are establishing national supply chains, industry partnerships and skilled workforces — all concentrated in the RMCs — which will allow us to maintain vessels closer to where they are operating or exercising, reducing transit times, and returning them to service more quickly.”Rear Admiral Malcolm

NORSTA Maritime will build a regional sovereign sustainment capability by developing and maintaining supply chains and nurturing existing regional capabilities, further promoting Australian industry involvement
